Not only has Ronald Hamilton uncovered the real cause of death for Christopher McCandless, we now know that a plant before thought to be perfectly harmless and edible can actually be quite deadly in a certain population and under the right circumstances, both of which were criteria that Mr. McCandless, in his youthful enthusiasm, tragically came to meet.

In his paper "The Silent Fire: ODAP and the Death of Christopher McCandless" Hamilton, a Writer and Book Binder by trade, in a fascinating coincidence happened upon a connection while reading Jon Krakauer's "Into The Wild" and a Nazi experiment carried out at Vapniarca, a little-known World War II concentration camp in the German-occupied Ukraine, he had once read about in his past.

  1. R.I.P, C McCandless..........how a simple error leads to irreversible consequences..........he wasn`t the fool people assumed him to be and his untimely death may lead to some good by the knowledge now learned and warning people of the danger of this plant.

    1. From what I can tell there is no a lot of middle ground for him to most people. He ranges from hero to absolute idiot. I think a lot of Alaskans will regard him as the latter no matter what the actual circumstances.

  2. Bugger McCandless. For a brief moment years ago I was struck by the story until I read more.

    1. maybe ...but this new report is a proof that he wasn`t just a fool...his actions may be foolish to some people with a hatred of anybody doing something they want to do but this could have happened to anybody...there was no prior knowledge of the effects of the plant he consumed and I expect many people in his situation would have done exactly the same...we`re all susceptible to errors and his was fatal...don`t condemn him for wanting to follow his own path in life.
